City Finances

Every Vote Counts

Upcoming Election

Rancho Mirage is recognized as the best managed and governed city in the Coachella Valley, some even say California or the country. There is no denying the current city council which includes Dana Hobart, Iris Smotrich and Charles Townsend have played a critical role and contributed their expertise to accomplish this goal. Through intelligent business and budgeting, our city has never been stronger financially.

We have developed fabulous amenities such as a world class library/observatory, amphitheater, dog park all without taking on any debt. Further, we are careful to avoid mistakes such as the highly publicized CV Link. This $100 million 20'-30' roadway would have negatively impacted our residential and business areas and to this date an unknown significant operation and maintenance expense. We felt it incumbent that our residents decide and thus 80% voted against this intrusion in Rancho Mirage.

To perpetuate the leadership and success we enjoy please make certain you vote to re-elect:

vote For Danan Hobart   Dana Hobart,
vote For Danan Hobart   Iris Smotrich and

The two most important points around the City's financial position are: First, Rancho Mirage is debt free. We have maintained a balanced budget since our incorporation in 1973. Second, we continue to operate with a surplus and remain on our two year budget plan target for 2017-2018.

Rancho Mirage Energy Authority

Rancho Mirage Energy Authority The city of Rancho Mirage is the latest city to join the California Choice Energy Authority that allowed the City to establish and operate a program to offer rate savings to residents and businesses. The program gave local control of rate setting and energy procurement to the City.

"Electricity bills can be a significant burden for City of Rancho Mirage residents and businesses due to the climate in our region," said Isaiah Hagerman, City of Rancho Mirage Director of Administrative Services. "The primary goal of Rancho Mirage Energy Authority is to save residents money, not to create a municipal utility burdened with high administrative costs. The Rancho Mirage Energy Authority has the potential to be another area where the City Council can positively impact our residents and business community."

Starting May 1st local officials decide where to buy energy for the city's 18,000 residents - a change that is expected to lower electricity bills by 5 percent, and allow the City to buy cleaner energy than we'd get from Southern California Edison.

Library and Observatory

Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory Construction is underway on the valley's only research-quality telescope to be located just west of the Rancho Mirage Library. Some unique facts about the observatory include:

  • The building is designed to isolate the telescope from the rest of the structure to minimize vibration during use.
  • The telescope features a 28 inch diameter mirror built by PlanWave.
  • The Dome is 22 feet in diameter and runs on two motors to move it into viewing position or to track progress of the night sky.
  • The telescope pier is 10 feet by 10 feet and weighs approximately 75 tons.
  • During days of cloud cover, high winds or rain, the system will automatically shut down instrumentation and close the dome to protect the telescope.
  • The open deck around the dome will facilitate up to four amateur astronomers providing electrical and data ports for their telescopes.
  • Images from the telescope will be projected onto a screen in the library for public viewing
